Aurora Borealis
Tallinn, Estonia

August 2022
On select nights, the magical spectacle of the Northern Lights reveals itself to an abandoned military base on the Estonian seaside. These tunnels, not far from the Kaali meteor craters that figure prominently in early Estonian paganism, and close to the cultural hub of Tallinn, have a layout that invites cosmological speculation. We imagined that the radiation patterns emitted by a typical aurora borealis were linked to the ruins of this military constellation, whose circular gun mounts, connected by above-ground passageways, resemble a cluster of stars. In our narrative, the residual spiralic information ejected by the aurora borealis became the fuel for our astronomer’s experimental machinations in his quest to track the planetary voices.
Our performance, too, was largely experimental with a small test audience. We hope to soon spend more time on these fertile oceanside stairways, getting our hair entangled in emerald-hued solar winds and magnetospheric emissions.
